BEFORE THE SONG

Activity: The teacher shows some flashcards of parts of the body in order to familiarize the students with the words of the songs: head, shoulders, knees, toes, eyes, ears, mouth and nose; and he/she says these words in English. Children repeat after the teacher.

Next, the children say the parts of the body when the teacher shows the flashcards.

Flashcards can be shown by means of a Power Point presentation because it is highly motivating and attractive.

head and shoulders.ppt  (In the presentation, the flashcards appear in the same order and the same times that they appear in the song).

Activity: Pupils have to be aware that some words are plurals such as shoulders, knees, toes, eyes, ears. The teacher presents the pictures of the singular forms in order that students see the difference.

Then the teacher presents the students with the following list of words and they have to classify them into singular and plural nouns. Afterwards the teacher asks them to see if they have found out the rule of the formation of the plural:

 head – shoulder – nose – shoulders – knee – toe – toes – knees – eyes – ears – ear – eye - mouth

DURING THE SONG

Before they sing the song, children must follow several steps in order to learn the song. First the teacher sings the song doing mime and the appropriate movements. Next, students repeat the song doing the same gestures as the teacher slowly. Then children repeat the song helped by the teacher; and finally, pupils sing the song alone.

 SONG

Head and shoulders, knees and toes

Knees and toes

Head and shoulders, knees and toes,

Knees and toes

And eyes and ears, and mouth and nose

Head and shoulders, knees and toes,

Knees and toes.

New version of the song:

1. Firstly we sing the whole song, pointing at the different parts of the body.

2. Next, we sing the song without mentioning the word ‘head, we hum it instead of saying the word. E.g: “We are not going to say head, we will only point to it, but we won’t say this word”.

3. “We are not going to say head and shoulders, we will only point to them”.

4. “This time, we are not going to say head, shoulders or knees, we will only point to the three things”. We sing all the song without mentioning these words, we have to hum instead of saying these words.

5. Then, “we are not going to say head, shoulders, knees and toes”.

6. Finally, the teacher tells the students: “Let’s say head, let’s say shoulders, let’s say knees and let’s say toes. We are going to sing the song with all the words, but this time very quickly”.

AFTER THE SONG

Activity: The teacher gives the students the shape of a human body. The students have to draw the parts of the body mentioned in the song and write their English names next to the pictures.

Game: The teacher gives his/her students orders and the students have to follow them only if he/she gives the orders accompanied by the word ‘please’. Examples: The teacher says: “Touch you ears”. Students should not touch their ears because the teacher has not said “please”. “Touch your nose, please”. The students follow the order. “Please, touch your mouth”. The students follow the order. The child who makes a mistake when following an order is disqualified.

Game: Body Snap. The students are given cards of pictures of the different parts of the body in the song: ear, mouth, nose, eye, head, shoulder, knee and toe; and cards of their corresponding written form. In pairs, the two children turn over one of their cards at the same time. If the two cards are the same, they have to say the name of the part of the body and Snap. The child who says these words first, gains a point. For example, ear (picture)- ear (text) or ear (picture) and ear (picture), children say EAR- SNAP. The first child who says EAR- SNAP gains a point.

Activity: Students elaborate a dictionary with cards of the vocabulary of the parts of the body learnt in this song.
